Music She Wrote

  • Chapman Cultural Center 200 East Saint John Street Spartanburg, SC, 29306 United States (map)

Music She Wrote is the title of this chamber music program featuring the works of women composers. Fanny Mendelssohn, sister of famed composer Felix Mendelssohn, was an accomplished composer during a time when society was not ready to embrace the fact that women could write music as equally significant as their male counterparts. Her String Quartet from 1834 is a testament to her enduring brilliance.

Florence Price was the first African American woman to have her music played by a major orchestra. Her Five Folk Songs in Counterpoint is an imaginative reframing from 1951 of old American spirituals for string quartet.

Two living women composers are also featured on this program: Polish-American Dosia McKay’s Grit and Glitz for String Quartet and recent Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte.
