DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND SPECIAL EVENTS

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Spartanburg Philharmonic is the largest professional performing arts organization in Spartanburg with roots reaching back to the 1880’s. Our mission is to enrich, inspire, and educate the Spartanburg community through live performances of high-quality music. The numerous mission-based programs include our Classics Series, Espresso Series, Bluegrass Spartanburg, Music Sandwiched In, Spartanburg Music Trail and Link Up (partnership with Carnegie Hall).

JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Marketing and Special Events is responsible for planning, supervising, administering, and evaluating programs that meet or exceed attendance and ticket revenue goals for orchestra events and maximizing the visibility of the orchestra. This position will develop marketing plans, programs and communications to promote the mission of the organization, including but not limited to market research, innovative marketing content, marketing strategies, publicity promotions, digital marketing, public relations and audience development strategy. Additionally, the position will plan and facilitate events, such as pre- and post-concert receptions, sponsored events, special luncheons or dinners. This is a full-time position reporting to the Executive Director.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for season subscription and renewal campaigns, advertising and special promotions, direct mail, and merchandising

  • Crafts and implements an institutional marketing strategy, which includes strategically and creatively leveraging digital technologies, social media, and traditional media

  • Maintains close contact with media outlets and fulfills media requests

  • Solicits, arranges and organizes media interviews (print, radio, and TV) for full spectrum of activities

  • Updates, manages and maintains website and social media accounts

  • Writes press releases, emails, website content, newsletters, blog and magazine content

  • Manages ad sales for program book

  • Researches and develops marketing partnerships to explore new ideas and events that foster sales and grows new audiences

  • Manages the Marketing Budget and sales goals for ticket revenue

  • Coordinates, executes, and attends special events including pre- and post-concert receptions, sponsored events, and special luncheons or dinners

  • Staff Liaison to Philharmonic Board’s Audience Development Committee

  • Maintain and coordinate implementation of an annual marketing and communications calendar

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications, journalism or related field required with at least 3-5 years’ experience in marketing/communications

  • Thorough understanding of marketing elements (including traditional and digital marketing such as SEO/Social media, etc.) and market research methods

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills

  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, multi-task and meet deadlines

  • High energy, outgoing, team player and passionate about the arts and music

Salary

This is a full-time position requiring some nights and weekends. Salary is commensurate with applicant’s qualifications and experience.
