Job Description

The Director of Development is a key member of the Spartanburg Philharmonic leadership team and works closely with the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and Fund Development Committee to advance the organization's philanthropic goals.

The Director of Development leads and manages a comprehensive fundraising program with primary responsibility for individual giving, the Annual Fund, corporate sponsorships, donor cultivation and stewardship, and other development initiatives. This is a highly relationship-oriented position that combines strategic planning with hands-on fundraising and execution.

The successful candidate will be a confident relationship builder who enjoys connecting people to an organization's mission and can develop meaningful, long-term relationships with donors, subscribers, businesses, community partners, and volunteers. The Director will also help engage the Board and other volunteers in fundraising and serve as a visible ambassador for the Philharmonic throughout the community.

Responsibilities

Individual Giving & Annual Fund

  • Develop and implement strategies to acquire, renew, upgrade, and retain individual donors.

  • Manage the Philharmonic's Annual Fund program, including annual planning, appeals, donor communications, solicitation, stewardship, and reporting.

  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors and prospects, with an emphasis on building long-term philanthropic relationships.

  • Coordinate donor recognition and stewardship activities that demonstrate appreciation and strengthen donor relationships.

 

Corporate Sponsorship & Business Development

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward corporate sponsors and advertisers.

  • Develop sponsorship proposals and presentations tailored to the goals and interests of prospective corporate partners.

  • Maintain strong relationships with existing corporate sponsors and identify opportunities for renewal and increased support.

  • Work with the Executive Director and appropriate staff to develop sponsorship benefits, recognition, and fulfillment.

 

Major Gifts & Donor Cultivation

  • Build and maintain a portfolio of individual donors and prospects.

  • Develop and implement individualized cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies.

  • Coordinate donor meetings, events, tours, backstage experiences, and other opportunities that deepen engagement with the Philharmonic.

  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board members on major donor cultivation and solicitation.

 

Board & Fund Development Committee Support

  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Fund Development Committee.

  • Partner with the Executive Director and Committee Chair to coordinate meetings, agendas, communications, fundraising priorities, and follow-up.
