Alvoy Bryan - Principal Viola

Dr. Alvoy Bryan Jr. has been a violinist and violist for almost thirty years. He is a professional orchestral and chamber musician, conductor, arranger, and teacher.

Dr. Bryan has also been married to Nicole Bryan for the last ten and half years and is the father of five children (one son and four daughters): Elijah (7), Naimah (9), Isis (10), Micah (12), and Malachi (15). His two older children are from a previous marriage. Dr. Bryan loves to play video games (PlayStation 4), and he is very into technology. His favorite sport is basketball. Dr. Bryan loves eating home-cooked meals by his beautiful wife Nicole.

He is also a member of several fraternities: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Gamma Eta Chapter), Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Inc. (Xi Beta Chapter), College Lodge No. 378 Free & Accepted Masons (PHA), Ethiopia Chapter No. 60 (Holy Royal Arch Masons), O.D. Berry Royal & Select Council No. 1, Joshua Commandery No. 10, and C.C. Johnson Consistory No. 136.

Dr. Bryan is very active in the community with his Masonic organizations. They support family shelters, give away bikes and tablets for students achieving academic success at local middle and high schools, and gives away scholarships to high school graduates attending college for the first time. However, at the end of the day, Dr. Bryan loves spending time at home watching a movie with his wife and children.

  1. If you could give student musicians one piece of advice, what would it be? Develop a consistent practice schedule, and perfect your technique on their instrument.

  2. What piece or composer do you wish orchestras played more often? Afro American Symphony by William Grant Still

  3. What is your worst travel experience? I was traveling with a youth orchestra to Florida from Georgia on a bus and I did not have enough leg room. My knees were killing me.

  4. What are you reading right now? This Book Is Anti-Racist: 20 lessons on how to wake up, take action, and do the work by Tiffany Jewell

  5. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why? Anywhere as long as my wife and kids are with me. However, I prefer the southern part of the United States. My ancestors suffered and built this country. At the end of the day, I am a southern gentleman.

  2. What is the best concert you’ve ever been to, classical or otherwise? I attended a concert with the Naples Philharmonic featuring the violinist Vadim Gluzman. He performed the Beethoven Violin Concerto which is one of my favorite concertos.
  3. What is something you are oddly competitive about? I am competitive about everything. However, to answer the question, video games.
  4. If you won a million-dollar lottery tomorrow, what would be the first three things you did? First, meet with a financial advisor. Second, pay off all my debt. Third, secure the financial future for my wife and kids.
  5. What would the title of your autobiography be? The Journey of Life of Dr. Alvoy Louis Bryan Jr.
