Radiant

  • Twichell Auditorium 580 East Main Street Spartanburg, SC, 29302 United States (map)

Dedicated to our community’s front-line workers and the memory of those lost over the past year, we invite you to shake free from the dark and step into the light created by beautifully performed music. The program for Radiant is specially curated to rekindle your love of classical music and reignite your spirit. From a reflective and breathtakingly brilliant new work by Peter B. Kay to the vibrantly cheerful and triumphant melodies of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2, join us as we relight the concert hall and bring live music back to Twichell Auditorium.

All ticket holders are invited to join us for our pre-concert Classical Conversations with Chris Vaneman (Dean of the School of the Arts at Converse University) held in Lawson Hall. Chris will provide historic anecdotes and insight into the concert program. Guest Conductor Kayoko Dan will provide additional perspective and guest soloist Douglas Weeks will perform the piano arrangement of Elgar’s Nimrod from Enigma Variations. Both of the evening’s performances of Nimrod are dedicated to the memory of our beloved benefactor, Kurt Zimmerli.

The Conductor

Kayoko Dan

Dan currently serves as the Music Director of the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera, a position she's held since 2011. A versatile conductor, Kayoko Dan is active in the fields of orchestra, ballet, and opera. The Spartanburg Philharmonic is excited to welcome to her to the podium for our first concert of the 2021/22 Season.

One definition of a term “conductor” is "a body capable of transmitting energy." I love this definition. As a conductor of an orchestra, I facilitate the transmission of energy from the music to the audience, through my interpretation and my fellow musicians' commitments. - Kayoko Dan
