We Are Music

We Are Music - a big, bold statement for our 94th Season, but one intended without hubris or ego. Simply put, We Are what we love, and we absolutely love Music. It is also a nod to our enormous 2022-23 Season, one of the largest in our history. And honestly, it wouldn't be possible without your support. That "We" in our theme isn't just about the Spartanburg Philharmonic; it's about you and our dedicated community of music lovers in and around Spartanburg. It's about all of us coming together for a meaningful, shared experience that broadens our world and inspires our lives. We Are Music represents everything we are as the Spartanburg Philharmonic - a community with a deep, mutual appreciation for Music.

We Are Music is also an invitation to you. It is an open call to return to the concert hall and to the enjoyment of experiencing live Music in the company of your community. Author Erin Morganstern once wrote, "A show without an audience is nothing, after all. In the response of the audience, that is where the power of performance lives." Each musician that is part of a Spartanburg Philharmonic concert - from the orchestra to the artists we present - thrives on how you respond to their performance. It is a shared experience between a performer and their audience - the emotions of each driving and powering a singularly unique moment.

Regardless of how often you have heard a piece or song, each performance has a different nuance. In the words of the famous conductor Gustavo Dudamel, "The challenge is not so much to change the sound. The challenge is to connect and to create something special." That is why, together, We Are Music.

We Are Music also gives you, our audience, the opportunity to be a part of selecting our next Music Director. This Season, all six Zimmerli concerts are led by a conductor auditioning for the position with the Spartanburg Philharmonic. Each talented finalist brings with them new possibilities and vibrant energy to your orchestra. We hope you join us for our Zimmerli concerts this Season, where you can review the conductor and help the Search Committee determine who will be the next Spartanburg Philharmonic Music Director.

Our roots will always be in performing classic symphonies and concertos written by master composers like Tchaikovsky and Elgar. But in the last 94 years, our appreciation and affection for contemporary pieces and underperformed orchestral gems has grown. So has our enjoyment of other styles and genres of Music. Where else than with the Spartanburg Philharmonic can you hear an award-winning Bluegrass band, a world-renowned classical violinist, and a phenomenal jazz pianist all in the span of a month? These are just three of the exceptional, high-quality live performances that are a part of our monumental 94th Season. Our deep love of Music is expressed in each concert on the 2022-23 calendar, and we hope you feel it in every note you hear in the audience. We invite you and genuinely wish you can join us this Season.
