Volunteering with Spartanburg Philharmonic for their Espresso series was a great opportunity that I recommend everyone try at least once. Volunteering at one of the concerts means getting an up-close look at exactly what goes into putting a concert together. You learn how to set up the venue, work Front of House, mingle with guests, or work back stage and assist musicians before they go on stage. This was an invaluable experience for me for such a small time commitment.

I had a great time working as an event volunteer with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Espresso series. I was able to be a stage hand, help with audio visual behind the scenes, and assist with some office tasks. Everyone on the staff is friendly and easy going and I always looked forward to volunteering there. Since then, I have considered looking for full time positions similar to the work at Spartanburg Philharmonic when I graduate.”

Internships

An internship with a professional philharmonic can launch an exciting career in the arts. That’s why the Spartanburg Philharmonic is proud to provide practical, hands-on professional experience to local students through our internship program. Interns work closely with professionals in areas such as operations, development, marketing, public relations, and arts education while participating in projects that allow them to apply academic knowledge and develop professional skills in a non-profit environment. We accept interns on an "as needed" basis and applications are accepted at any time during the year.

To be considered for an internship with the Spartanburg Philharmonic, you must currently be enrolled in a degree-seeking program (undergraduate or graduate). All Spartanburg Philharmonic internships are unpaid, with the opportunity to receive academic credit depending on university requirements.

For internships in Marketing and Events, contact us coliver@spartanarts.org.

Working as an intern with the Spartanburg Philharmonic has allowed me to grow and learn in so many ways. Not only have I grown in my leadership skills, but I have also grown in my ability to handle tough situations quickly and productively. I was also exposed a little more to the life of an orchestral musician and was able to learn how everything works. It was a wonderful experience and I can’t wait to continue next year!

Internships are such a good way to help you realize what you are really interested in. You can study and learn things in class, but you start seeing a bigger picture when you actually get into the work force. Interning with the Spartanburg Philharmonic has allowed me to understand how the Arts affect our community. On top of that, seeing what energy and effort goes into having a concert is humbling. Every event has a different checklist and being able to see the accumulation of small day-to-day tasks come to fruition on Concert day is amazing. Everything falls into place and you feel a great sense of accomplishment; one of those ‘I-helped-with-the-success-of-this-concert-type feeling.

An internship with Spartanburg Philharmonic has been such a great learning experience for me! It’s provided me opportunities to gain more knowledge about marketing, arts management, and the inner workings of an orchestra. It’s also helped me discover a passion for bringing music and the arts to my local community!
