The Genuine Genius of George Gershwin

To celebrate our the last Zimmerli concerts of the season, which features a piano soloist, we are taking a deep dive into one of the most influential pianists, composers, and jazz innovators of the twentieth century, George Gershwin. Gaining popularity with his piece, Rhapsody in Blue, the New York Symphony Society commissioned a piano concerto, Concerto in F major, which became the largest and most complex work for the concert stage he had ever undertaken. Gershwin wished to evoke “the young, enthusiastic spirit of American life” as well as introspection and melancholy. Come to April’s concert, American Songscape, to hear the concerto performed live by guest soloist, Dominic Cheli.
