Spartanburg Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
The Concerto Competition is held annually in the fall and is open only to members of the Spartanburg Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. The Concerto Competition is used to select soloists to perform with the Youth Orchestra at the scheduled spring concert.
Pay the Registration Fee of $15 by the deadline.
Musicians must fill out the registration form below by the deadline.
Registration will NOT be considered complete until BOTH the Registration Fee is paid and the Registration Form is completed.
The deadline to register is: Sunday, September 29, 2019.
Participants must perform a single-movement piece or a movement of a standard concerto for their instrument.
The Youth Orchestra Conductor must approve repertoire before an audition (but not before Applicants fill out the Registration Form below). She will evaluate based on suitability of performance by the orchestra and availability of the orchestral parts.
You may play a single-movement work or one movement of a multi-movement concerto. The repertoire must be approved by the conductor prior to the submission of an application.
Pieces must be timed accurately, including all tuttis (measures where the soloist doesn’t play), and submitted on the entry form.
Movements/pieces must be 15 minutes or less, unless approved by the conductor.
Works must be memorized.
Original music must be provided for the adjudicators on the day of the competition.
Piano accompanists must be used and provided by the applicant.
For the purpose of the audition, accompanists must cut long orchestral tuttis.
Each audition will last approximately 15 minutes, allowing for entering, tuning and exiting. The only music that will be performed for the judges will be the concerto movement. The panel of judges may interrupt Musicians if the piece lasts longer than about 10 minutes.
The audition schedule, once finalized, will be strictly adhered to.
Taped auditions are not accepted.
Multiple Winners may be announced, and all will perform with the Youth Orchestra on the spring concert.
Previous Winners cannot perform as soloists with the Youth Orchestra in consecutive years.
If chosen to perform with the orchestra, the Winner(s) will write program notes for the piece and provide their biography.
The Concerto Competition is judged by personnel from the Spartanburg Philharmonic.
