SPO to Present Free Father’s Day Concert

 Zimmerli Amphitheatre in Barnet Park

In recognition of Father’s Day, Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra will present a free concert-in-the-park Saturday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Zimmerli Amphitheatre in Barnet Park in downtown Spartanburg. It will feature one of the hottest and most-promising vocalists currently making international headlines in both classical and pop music — Kaitlyn Lusk, a 25-year-old soprano.

The Spartanburg Philharmonic gratefully acknowledges its sponsors for this free event and without them this concert would not be possible:  BMW MC, Century BMW, The Barnet Foundation, The City of Spartanburg, and the Spartanburg Downtown Marriott.

This pops concert — Father’s Day Concert: A Hollywood Celebration! — will offer a wide variety of music aimed at appealing to men and their families, such as the patriotic songs Armed Forces Salute and American Salute; Disney tunes from The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, and Aladdin; and the classics Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Moon River, The Sound of Music, and Singin’ in the Rain. Lusk will also sing songs from the Lord of the Ring movie series, including May It Be, Breaking the Fellowship, and Into the West, which won an Oscar for Best Original Song for a movie. Conducting will be SPO Music Director Sarah Ioannides.

Lusk quickly gained international acclaim and won the hearts of audiences with her incredible voice and captivating presence. Since 2004, Lusk has been the featured vocal soloist in conductor Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings Symphony, performing this role with more than 50 of the world’s finest orchestras and many renowned conductors. At Shore’s request, Lusk performed the academy award-winning song Into The West as part of the Grammy Honors in New York City. Her expanded role in the Live to Projection Performances of the Lord of the Rings Films has brought her center stage in Radio City Music Hall, Royal Albert Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and in cities along the West Coast, Munich, Luzern (Switzerland), Singapore, Paris, Taiwan, and Chicago. In 2012 she performed with five of the world’s greatest orchestras — Munich, Rotterdam, Chicago, Sydney and London. She is also known for her revival of Judy Garland hits, such as Somewhere Over the Rainbow, which she is scheduled to sing in Spartanburg.

Other music on the program includes Star Spangled Banner, Amazing Grace, Under the Sea, A Whole New World, Be Our Guest, Bare Necessities, My Heart Will Go On, Fanfare for the Common Man, Hymn for the Fallen (Saving Private Ryan), As Time Goes By (Casablanca), Moon River (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.
