Just-In Jazz: Best Jazz Albums Released in the Last Year

The second Espresso concert of the 2022-23 season, featuring The Konrad Paszkudzki Trio and some of the best jazz from the American Songbook! To get you in a jazzy mood, lets explore some of the best jazz albums released in the past year, which are innovative both in instrumentation and story-telling. Jason Moran’s album, The Sound Will Tell You, features the piano, blurred occasionally by electronic effects, and is inspired by the writings of Toni Morrison. It was recorded over just two days in January 2021, and it portrays a perfect mixture of both sadness and hope. Intimate Strangers, an album by Sara Serpa and Emmanuel Iduma, explores the present-day legacy of colonialism, and Serpa tries to decenter her own Portuguese perspective. The music is described as “cool-toned, vocal-driven, abstract and yet immediately beautiful.”
