SPO APPRENTICE PROGRAM FOR STRINGS

The Apprenticeship Program was founded in the 2005-2006 season, brought about through the efforts of Maestra Sarah Ioannides and Concertmaster Sarah Johnson from Converse College. Since that time, the SPO has provided on-the-job learning experiences to dozens of developing musicians through live, professional concerts. Apprentices benefit from performing major orchestral literature in association with high-caliber performers and developing significant resume material. Originally limited to Converse College students, the program is now open to qualified students from all upstate area colleges as well as exceptional high school students.

Candidates are first nominated by their individual instructors and then invited to screened auditions consisting of standard orchestral excerpts. Auditions occur as needed in late Spring and/or early Fall, prior to the start of the SPO concert season if new applicants are nominated.

The program consists of 3 levels:

  • 1ST YEAR APPRENTICE - a contractual non-paid position with the expectation of the professionalism required of any SPO musician.
This includes having music well-prepared, being present and on time at all services, maintaining professional dress and decorum, etc.
  • 2ND YEAR APPRENTICE - a contractual paid position at an introductory rate.
  • 3RD YEAR APPRENTICE - a contractual paid position at a higher rate than 2nd Year Apprentices.

NOTES:

  • Apprentices are contracted and expected to play all or most of the regular season.
  • At any time, apprentices may request an audition to become regular members of the orchestra.
  • At the discretion of the Maestra and in consultation with the Concertmaster, the apprentice may be asked to re-audition should there be concerns regarding continuation in the program.

Side-by-Side Program

Every few years, the SPO offers a Side-by-Side concert in which developing musicians are invited to audition and play with the orchestra for a week. The program is geared toward exceptional high school musicians in the upstate but is open to undergraduates as well. The concert is an opportunity to work directly with high-caliber musicians in a professional setting, learning major orchestral literature and standard professional preparation techniques.

NOTES:

  • SIDE-BY-SIDE MUSICIAN - a contractual non-paid position with the expectation of the professionalism required of any SPO musician.
This includes having music well-prepared, being present and on time at all services related to the concert, maintaining professional dress and decorum, etc.
  • At the discretion of the Maestra and in consultation with the student's teacher, a Side-by-Side Musician may be asked to re-audition should there be concerns regarding their preparation for the concert.
